What Is a Fractional Sales Director?

Senior sales leadership, part time and ongoing. What the role actually involves inside a growing business.

A Fractional Sales Director is an experienced Sales Director working inside your business part time, on an ongoing basis.

The responsibilities are the same as a full-time director. The difference is the time commitment and the cost.

The short definition

A fractional director takes on the leadership of your sales function for an agreed number of days each month. They set the commercial strategy, manage the people who sell, own the pipeline and forecast, and answer for sales performance alongside the rest of your leadership team.

It is not advice delivered from outside the business. It is responsibility taken inside it — in your sales meetings, your CRM and your numbers.

What the role covers

  • Sales strategy: where growth comes from, which markets, which customers, at what price
  • Sales leadership: one-to-ones, sales meetings, targets, coaching and accountability
  • Pipeline and forecasting: CRM structure, qualification, opportunity reviews, conversion analysis
  • Business development: target accounts, new territories, partnerships and project generation
  • Sales and marketing alignment: lead quality, speed to lead, website conversion, PPC performance
  • Recruitment: defining sales roles, hiring and onboarding the right people

Why businesses use one

Most businesses between roughly £1m and £30m turnover reach a point where the Managing Director is still effectively running sales. Revenue plateaus, salespeople are unmanaged, forecasting is guesswork, and nobody senior owns the number. The capability required is a Sales Director. The cost of employing one is hard to justify.

How much time it takes

One to two days a week is typical. Engagements often start heavier while the strategy, process and pipeline are built, then settle into a steady rhythm of leadership, reviews and business development.

When it is not the right answer

If you need somebody physically selling five days a week, you need a salesperson. If you have a defined, finite project — a market entry study, a CRM rebuild — consultancy is cleaner. Fractional leadership earns its place when the gap is ongoing commercial direction and management.
